Sample 3-day Itinerary

  • DAY 0
    • Grab a Pizza at Mountain Pizza on the way through town. Enjoy it on your deck or hike up to the ridgeline for a sunset view. Snuggle into your cabin with board games and watch the stars through the picture windows.
  • DAY 1
    • Enjoy morning rays and breakfast on your deck, then head out for a few hours to a nearby lake. Mill Pond and Sand Pond are both accessible by car and are shallow for young kids. For older kids, check out a picnic site at Packer Lake, which has a swimming platform and a lodge for ordering food and milkshakes
    • Stop at Frosty on your way back through Portola to pick up old-school burgers and fries. Then enjoy the view while the kids play yard games and finish off the night with smores over the firepit.
  • DAY 2:
    • Grab a coffee at Nicole’s Deli and start your day at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, where kids can enjoy hands-on exhibits and maybe even a ride on a vintage train.
    • Head over to Graeagle for a mid-morning round of mini-golf and an leisurely afternoon at the Brewing Lair in Blairsden. The grassyhillside and outdoor yard games are a hit with the kiddos.
    • Return to High Camp to grill and enjoy an evening around a campfire, between Beckwourth Peak and Smith Peak.
  • DAY 3
    • Enjoy a morning hike up towards Beckwourth Peak. If the adults are feeling like an adventure, the trail will take you to Beckwourth Peak and way beyond. If you’re looking for a relaxing leg stretch, there’s a route through the aspen and up the ridge.
    • After packing up, enjoy a relaxing lunch at the headwaters Cafe in Portola. The owners have made a delightful patio and made-from-scratch menu.

    • Enjoy the local pool and surrounding park for a small fee.
    • Open Noon-5pm Tuesday-Saturday. Closed Sundays & Mondays.

Explore local shops, grab a cup of coffee at a cozy cafe, and soak in the small-town atmosphere.
  • Graeagle Stables
    • Check out their daily trail rides or riding lessons. Gold Lake Pack Station & Stables also offers packages to young riders.
  • Graeagle Mill Pond
    • Enjoy swimming, boat rentals and sun bathing.
