Getting Here & Access

How do I get to High Camp? +
High Camp is located in Plumas National Forest, just outside Portola, California. From Portola, you'll leave the pavement and drive approximately one mile up a gravel forest road to reach the property. Full directions and a map are on our Getting Here page.
What is the road like? Is it suitable for all vehicles? +
The final stretch to High Camp is a gravel forest road with some ruts and dips. Guests have had no problems making it up to High Camp in all types of vehicles, including 2-wheel drive sedans. There is one dip in the road where vehicles pulling a trailer with a low tongue may scrape. If you are considering bringing a trailer or a vehicle with a long, low overhang behind the rear axle (e.g., RV), we recommend watching the road preview video on our Getting Here page before you arrive. Please contact us if you have any concerns.
Is there parking on-site? +
Yes. Free parking is available at the property.
Is there cell service? +
Yes. Cell service is generally good in the area.
Is there EV charging at High Camp? +
There is no on-site EV charging. The nearest options are in downtown Portola (8 charging spots, about 1.5 miles away) and at the Sierra Valley Preserve Nature Center (4 charging stations, about 7 miles away). See our Getting Here page for details.

Check-in & Check-out

What are check-in and check-out times? +
Check-in is at 3pm. Check-out is at 11am. If you need a different arrangement, reach out in advance and we'll do our best to accommodate.
Is there a minimum stay requirement? +
Minimum stay requirements vary by season and unit. Check our booking page for current availability and minimums.

The Units

How many guests can each unit accommodate? +
The North Cabin sleeps up to 4. The South Cabin sleeps up to 4. The Yurt sleeps up to 5. The Campsite accommodates up to 5. The maximum across all units combined is 18 guests.
What are the sleeping arrangements? +
The North and South Cabins each have 2 queen bunk beds (4 guests). The Yurt has a queen bed and a pull-out on the main floor, plus 2 full beds in the loft (5 guests). The Campsite accommodates up to 5 guests in tents or a campervan.
Do the units have private bathrooms? +
No. All units share a central bathhouse with private, lockable shower rooms, changing rooms, and plenty of hot water. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided. The bathhouse is kept clean and well-stocked. If your group would like a dedicated bathroom reserved for your use, reach out in advance and we'll do our best to accommodate.
Do the cabins and yurt have heat and air conditioning? +
Yes. The cabins and yurt have both heat and air conditioning.
Is there electricity in the units? +
Yes. The units have electricity for lighting and charging devices.
Is bedding provided? +
Yes. All units include sheets, duvets, pillows, a throw blanket, towels, and washcloths.
Are toiletries provided? +
Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided in the bathhouse. Bring your own personal items beyond those basics.
What should I bring? +
All food and beverages; any personal toiletries beyond what's provided in the bathhouse; sunscreen and bug spray; layers for cool evenings (it can drop significantly at 5,300 feet after sunset); any specialized gear for activities you have planned. S'mores kits and disc golf discs are available for purchase on-site.

WiFi & Connectivity

Is there WiFi? +
Yes. High Camp has Starlink WiFi available for all guests.
Can I work remotely from High Camp? +
Starlink provides reliable high-speed internet. Many guests use it for remote work, video calls, and streaming.

Kitchen & Cooking

What cooking facilities are in the units? +
The cabins and yurt each have a kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, plates, bowls, and utensils. The cabins have a sink; the yurt has a water dispenser. A grill is available to rent for your stay.
What kitchen supplies are provided? +
Units are stocked with: coffee, creamer, and sugar; salt and pepper; dishes, bowls, cups, and mugs; utensils; a bottle opener; dish soap and a dish towel. Bring your own food and any specialty cooking equipment.
What should I bring for meals? +
Bring all the food and beverages you'll need for your stay. Portola has a grocery store and the Feather River Food Co-op if you need to pick up supplies on the way in. A cooler is handy for day trips.

Campfire & Outdoor Activities

Is there a campfire? +
Yes. There is a communal fire pit with firewood provided for all guests. Open fires may be restricted during periods of high fire danger. We follow all current Plumas National Forest fire restrictions and will notify guests of any limitations before arrival.
What outdoor activities are available on the property? +
High Camp has a 20-basket disc golf course winding through the pines. Singletrack mountain bike trails and gravel roads leave directly from the property. Hiking trails connect to Plumas National Forest. There's also a shaded picnic area with 360° views and a communal fire pit for evenings. Indoor and outdoor games are available for all guests.
Are there trails and rides right from the property? +
Yes. Mountain bike singletrack and gravel cycling routes leave directly from High Camp. Hiking trails on the 65-acre property connect to the national forest. See our routes pages for details.

The Town of Portola

What can I find in Portola? +
Portola is a small mountain town about 1.5 miles from High Camp with most of what you'll need. There's a grocery store, the Feather River Food Co-op (locally sourced produce, bulk goods, and a deli), gas stations, EV charging, restaurants, and a taproom. It's worth stocking up on food and fuel before heading up the hill.
Where should we eat or grab a drink? +
Blue Door Cafe is a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. Fresh-baked pastries, coffee, and hearty home-cooked meals. Box Car Taphouse has 20 taps, house beers, wine, and food in a relaxed downtown setting. Rico's Mexican, Mountain Pizza, and other local favorites are also downtown. If you're up for a short drive, the Brewing Lair is a fun outdoor beer garden with picnic tables, a 9-hole disc golf course, lawn games, and fire pits.
Is there EV charging in Portola? +
Yes. There are 8 EV charging spots in downtown Portola, about 1.5 miles from High Camp, easy to hit on the way in or out. There are also 4 charging stations at the Sierra Valley Preserve Nature Center, about 7 miles away. See our Getting Here page for details.

Rules & Policies

Are pets allowed? +
No. Pets are not permitted at High Camp.
Is smoking allowed? +
No smoking anywhere on the property.
What are quiet hours? +
Quiet hours are 10pm to 8am. Other guests and neighboring properties are nearby, so please be respectful.
What is the cancellation policy? +
Cancellations made 14 or more days before check-in receive a full refund minus a 5% processing fee. Cancellations within 14 days of check-in are non-refundable.

Groups & Events

Can I book High Camp for a group or event? +
Yes. High Camp can accommodate groups of up to 18 guests across all four units. To coordinate a group booking or ask about event possibilities, email us at [email protected].
Are there age restrictions? +
All ages are welcome at High Camp.

Weather & What to Pack

What is the weather like? +
High Camp sits at 5,300 feet in elevation in the Sierra Nevada. Summers are warm and sunny with cool nights. Temperatures can drop into the 40s after sunset even in July and August. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in July and August. Spring and fall can be cold. Always check the forecast and pack layers.
What should I pack? +
Layers for cool mornings and evenings; a rain jacket or windbreaker; sunscreen and sunglasses (the altitude means stronger UV); sturdy shoes for trails; any gear for biking, hiking, or other activities; food and beverages for your stay; and your own toiletries.
